Hiking

Giants Ridge offers four hiking trails that traverse through the alpine mountain, nordic trails, and through our surrounding forests.

Northface Hiking Trail
Trail starts west of The Lodge climbing up the Cat Track. After about one/half mile, the trail enters the woods and continues to climb another mile and one/half before reaching the vista views at the top of the mountain. The hike continues down the mountain via the alpine area or, returns to the Cat Track on the signed wooded trails. Distance: Just over 3 miles.

Birches Hiking Trail
Access the trail from the Legend golf course cart path just past hole #10. Follow the blue Birches signs up the big hill on the snowmobile trail until it enters the woods on the west side of the trail. Follow the signs to the Laurentian Shelter overlooking Wynne Creek, and follow the signs back to the golf cart path. Distance: Almost 4 miles.

Sleeping Giant Hiking Trail
Access the trail via the paved Mesabi Bike Trail south of the Chalet. Follow the signs west, off the Mesabi Trail and continue to the vista views at the top of the mountain. To continue back, take the trail down the alpine ski area or, follow the signs down the wooded trails back to your starting point on the Mesabi
Trail. Distance: Just over 3 miles.

Mesabi Trail (Hiking/Walking & Biking Trail)
The Mesabi Trail runs right through Giants Ridge and was just named Best Rural Bike Trail in Minnesota by Star Tribune journalists. In describing the Mesabi Trail, Tribune editors said: "It's hard to beat the Mesabi Trail, with 115 miles of completed paving that squeezes through rock cuts and offers stunning overlooks of open-pit mines, marinated in that North Country scenery."  The Mesabi Trail currently stretches from Grand Rapids to McKinley, with additional paved spurs to Fayal Township, and between Biwabik, Giants Ridge and Aurora. Giants Ridge guests may pick up the trail just outside of the ski chalet. Trail is open spring through fall.
